They know the math.
They don't know the materials.

The single clearest signal in this dataset, and it should reshape how the first weeks of training are spent.

Core teachers rate their content knowledge for the grade levels they are about to teach at an average of 0 out of 6. Seventy-two percent put themselves at a 5 or 6.

The same teachers rate their familiarity with the Bluebonnet materials at an average of 0. Forty-two percent sit at 2.5 or below, and 0 of them rated their ability to locate a specific lesson a flat 1.

That is not a content problem. It is an access and orientation problem, and it is much faster to fix.

Read this first

Every teacher segment in this survey named the same top priority: increase student engagement. It ranked first among teachers who know the materials cold and first among teachers who have barely opened them.

That makes engagement the safest thing to build training around, and also the least diagnostic. The write-in comments say what the checkbox could not: attendance is inconsistent, lesson pages arrive as blank open-ended space, and the materials were designed for a room, not a screen.

What the cohort looks like

Two very different populations answered this form. Only core math teachers were routed to the substantive questions, so all analysis below is based on that group.

Respondents by role

  • The 74 non-core respondents produced zero data. School leaders, inclusion teachers, and EB support staff correctly self-identified and were skipped past every item. Their needs are currently invisible.
  • Every response is from a unique email address. No duplicates.
  • The cohort is concentrated in one operator. More than 90% of all responses came from a single email domain, with small groups from three other virtual programs.

Four self-ratings, one scale

All four items used the same 1 to 6 scale, so they can be read side by side. Bars show how many of the 81 core teachers chose each point. The violet needle marks the mean.

The shape of the gap

For each teacher, materials familiarity is the average of the two materials items. Subtracting that from content knowledge gives a per-person gap. A positive gap means they know the math better than they know the book.

    What moves together, and what does not

    Pearson correlations across the 81 core teachers. These are descriptive only, not causal, and the sample is small.

    The two materials items track each other closely, which is expected. Technology competency is essentially unrelated to everything else. Teachers who cannot find a lesson are not the same people who struggle with their devices.

    What teachers say they want

    Teachers were asked to select their two highest priorities. Sixty-nine of 81 selected exactly two. Percentages are of the filtered group, so they sum to roughly 200%.

    Materials familiarity is the average of the navigate and understand items. Content knowledge is the single self-rating for the grade levels being taught.

    The named caseload

    One group should not wait for a scheduled session.

    Highest need

    0 teachers rate content knowledge at 3 or below and materials familiarity at 2.5 or below. That is roughly one in six of your core teachers, and they are about to open a curriculum they do not know to teach content they are not yet confident in, to a synchronous class that averages 51 to 125 students.

    This is a coaching caseload with names attached, not a PD topic. The survey carries email addresses, so the list already exists.

    Six findings and what to do about each

    Each finding is tied to the specific numbers behind it. The suggested moves are sequenced for the weeks before and just after launch.

    Before day one

    • Asynchronous materials navigation module with a timed find-it task.
    • Push per-lesson split PDFs so nobody navigates a monolithic file.
    • Leaders answer the screen-viewing software question in writing.
    • Order the 13 missing second monitors.

    First three weeks

    • Participation architecture session built for 60 minutes and 75 plus students.
    • Model two digital routines inside a real Bluebonnet lesson, not in the abstract.
    • Start the named coaching caseload of 13.
    • Run the parallel survey for the 74 non-core staff.

    By first grading period

    • Publish the compressed pacing plan against actual instructional days.
    • Recruit the 17 highest-readiness teachers to demo lessons.
    • Re-run these four rating items and compare the means.
    • Move data collection support from wanted to embedded.

    Data notes and limits

    • Everything on this page is computed live from the uploaded spreadsheet. No figure was typed in by hand. Email addresses were removed before the data was embedded, so this file can be shared without exposing respondents.
    • All ratings are self-report and were collected before teachers had worked in the materials. Materials familiarity in particular is likely to be an optimistic estimate rather than a pessimistic one.
    • The engagement option may be inflated by its wording. It was the broadest and most universally appealing choice on the list, and it won in every subgroup. Treat its dominance as a signal to investigate rather than a mandate.
    • The form collected no grade level, course, or campus. That means no breakout by Grade 6 through 8 versus Algebra I, Geometry, or Algebra II, which is the single most useful cut you are missing. Add it to the next form.
    • One minor inconsistency. One teacher selected asynchronous only on the class size item, while seven supplied an asynchronous student count. The asynchronous-only population is small either way and is reported as given.
    • Correlations are descriptive. With 81 respondents from a small number of programs, none of this generalizes beyond this cohort.
